Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

Everybody has that "schoolyard" crush on somebody in Hollywood. Well, at least I think everybody does. For me, Kate Winslet is my crush. The British beauty has earned my admiration and respect through her solid body of work and first caught my attention in Peter Jackson´s "Heavenly Creatures." I saw her next starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the mega blockbuster "Titanic." Since then, I´ve watched Kate with earnest admiration in films including "Sense and Sensibility," "Hideous Kinky," "Holy Smoke," "Quills," "Enigma" and a few others. I´m not sure if it is the accent or her bluish green eyes, but Kate is my favorite actress and even in a film where she sheds her accent and colors her hair undesirable shades of neon green and atomic blue, she is still a very lovely lady and an incredibly talented actress.

Kate isn´t the only Hollywood star involved in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Jim Carrey continues his pursuit for validation as a serious actor after previous dramatic attempts in "The Truman Show" and "The Majestic." Kirsten Dunst of the enormously popular "Spider-Man" films and Elijah Wood of the equally popular "Lord of the Rings" films have supporting roles in this unusual tale of love and a struggle to rise above problems that threaten to completely erase a loving relationship. Carrey has not gotten the respect he deserves in his previous dramatic endeavors, but "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" has received gracious critical acclaim and sits in high regard among film fans. With a current score of 8.5 on the Internet Movie Database, "Eternal Sunshine" is the fortieth highest scoring film on the site. Another popular Internet movie rating site, Rotten Tomatoes, has a composite score of critics ratings that is an incredibly high 94%. With the always lovely Kate, the underappreciated Jim Carrey and one of the more original and peculiar stories in the past five years, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" deserves the accolades it has received.

The film features Kate as Clementine Kruczynski and Jim Carrey as Joel Barish. Joel is a complete bore who wallflowers at parties and does not fully fit in with society. He is a quiet loner that barely accepts himself and is afraid of trying anything now or breaking out of his daily routine. Clementine is a wild girl who is socially outgoing and lives to make a statement. She is boisterous and loud. She dyes her hair in overly bright colors and possesses a complete inability to keep her own emotions bottled within her. Regardless of her outgoing behaviour, her unusual appearance and free spirited lifestyle forces her into being an outsider. Joel´s withdrawn demeanor keeps him on the social outside. They eventually meet on a train and believe they are falling in love for the first time. However, the two met previously at a beach party and became involved in a serious relationship, but due to a brainwashing technique, Joel and Clementine do not remember each other and they must fall in love over again.

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is a drama and a romantic film, but it is also a bona-fide entry in the science fiction genre. After having doubts in their earlier relationship and hitting rocky roads, the spontaneous Clementine rushes off to a firm called Lacuna to have her memories of Joel erased. After trying to talk to Clementine, Joel is stunned to find she cannot remember him after their very serious love affair. He visits Lacuna and speaks with Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). Mierzwiak and his assistants Stan (Mark Ruffalo), Patrick (Elijah Wood) and Mary (Kirsten Dunst) realize the suffering that Joel is feeling and give him and emergency brain erase of his memories of Clementine. While the procedure is taking place and Clementine is being pulled from Joel´s memories, he subconsciously realizes he wants to keep his loving memories of his girlfriend and fights the erasure process.

The film contains a deep and involved plot that requires full attention to completely grasp and enjoy. The two instances of Clementine and Joel´s meetings and subsequent romances are intertwined and the occurrences in Joel´s mind add a third reality to the film´s storyline. In some realities, Clementine has neon green hair. Other realities, the British beauty has atomic blue hair. Haircolor helps follow the twisty and convoluted plotline, and the unusual occurrences in Joel´s memories easily suggest when the happenings on screen are within his memories. The nature of their relationships and their desires to overcome individual shortcomings and dislikes of each other are detailed in the flashbacks and memories and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" uses its science fiction devices to look at troubled relationships and the notion that love can conquer all.

With solid performances from the film´s stars and supporting cast and one of the more imaginative storylines in many years, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is a fresh and unusual film that is captivating. With its non-linear storytelling and interesting combination of romantic and science fiction elements, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is a film that is unlike anything previously seen. Jim Carrey has struggled to gain acceptance as a serious actor and the wildly outgoing comic is perfect as the withdrawn Joel. He still has not found the tremendous box office success in dramas that he finds in comedies, but he shows his ability to be a serious actor in this film. I have a soft spot for Kate and am typically very biased towards her performances. She is a talented actress and breaks out of mold in "Eternal Sunshine." Director Michel Gondry does a yeoman´s job of putting the puzzle pieces on the table and allowing the audience just enough clues to put the puzzle together. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is one of those special films that comes along once a year and its Academy Award for Best Writing, Original Screenplay is further proof of that.
