Weeds: Season 1

"Weeds" is the Lionsgate Television, Showtime Cable network about a pot dealing widowed mother of two boys who lives and operates in an upscale housing community. This comedic series features Mary-Louise Parker in the starring role as Nancy Botwin and Elizabeth Perkins as her snot-nosed friend who leads the local Parent Teachers Association. Whereas the sitcom is slowly dying a painful death on network television, it is far from dead on Cable television and debuting in 2005, "Weeds" will soon begin its third season and testament that there is still life in the half-hour sitcom format. Benefiting from life as a cable television show, "Weeds" is allotted the freedom of strong drug content, strong sexual situations and vibrant and colorful language. "Weeds" is a funny television series that focuses on a story that is far from the norm of standard television and for those that are sick and tired of reality television, "Weeds" is a nice half hour escape.

The first season of "Weeds" is composed of ten half hour episodes. The show´s plot slowly builds from the very first episode when Nancy begins her day job of dealing marijuana and concludes with Nancy beginning a riskier and more profitable enterprise by expanding her resources and capabilities. The episode breakdowns and summaries are as follows:

You Can´t Miss the Bear This first episode introduces the main characters to the viewers and establishes Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) as a pot selling widow. Nancy purchases her weed from Heylia (Tonye Patano) and her cousin Conrad (Romany Malco) and daughter. Her best friend Celia (Elizabeth Perkins) is an uppity bitch who leads the PTA with an iron fist and strives for everything that best suits her needs. Nancy has two boys, Silas (Hunter Parrish) and Shane (Alexander Gould). Silas is having a sexual relationship with Celia´s daughter Quinn (Haley Hudson), which is causing friction between Celia and Nancy.

Free Goat The second episode begins with Silas unhappy that Celia has sent Quinn to a boarding school in Mexico. Everything is not perfect in Agrestic, as Celia´s husband Dean (Andy Milder) is sleeping with the Asian tennis pro and enjoys having the racquet´s handle shoved where the moon doesn´t shine. Nancy´s pot-smoking accountant Doug (Kevin Nealon) talks Nancy into starting a fake bakery, a fakery, to front as a business to cover up her pot dealings. Nancy needs to place her vehicle on collateral when she needs to take more stock from Heylia than she can afford.

Good Shit Lollipop Celia´s strive for perfection falls short with her daughter Isabelle´s (Allie Grant) weight problems. The chubby little girl hides a stash of chocolate in her bedroom, much to the chagrin of Celia. After Quinn is sent off to Mexico, Silas moves in on a cute deaf girl, Megan (Shoshannah Stern), who was rumored to give a blowjob to a fellow student. Shane combats a cougar and shoots in the eye, although Nancy believes he has killed a neighbor´s cat. Nancy decides to branch out her business and make baked goods that are laced with her pot after discovering that medicinal marijuana has grabbed Doug´s business from her.

Fashion of the Christ Series co-star Andy (Justin Kirk) is the brother of Nancy´s deceased husband and Nancy is none-too-happy to see Uncle Andy come to town. Andy is a pot-smoking loser who strives to sleep with as many women as possible and has failed at nearly every opportunity of business, including "Chris Died For Our Sins" T-Shirts that he pawns off to pre-teen children at the Agrestic Elementary School. The subplot that finds Celia suffering from breast cancer is unveiled when a number of Coca-Cola bottles destroy Dean and Celia´s bedroom ceiling.

Lude Awakening Celia has a new look on life and her formerly high standards of living while she comes to terms with her breast cancer. Shane is having great difficulty dealing with his father´s death and writes an obscenity laced gangster rap that makes school officials uneasy and his mother Nancy quite unhappy. Nancy continues to try to expand her business, but troubles come between her and her supplier Heylia. With her life starting to fray, her friend suffering from cancer and her sons having difficulties, Nancy starts to feel the pressures of her lifestyle.

Dead in the Nethers Conrad has a meeting with Nancy to discuss what modifications need to be made to her fake bakery to facilitate a weed selling business and gets more business than he bargains for when Celia decides to have a wild fling before having her breasts removed. Nancy´s maid Lupita (Renee Victor) discovers that Nancy is indeed a pot dealer and Lupita sets out to find the stash and confront Nancy, who has missed paying her and not given her a raise for quite some time. Andy gets busted when he decides to branch out on his own and sell his own pot and is forced to attend Marijuana Anonymous meetings.

Higher Education Shane meets a new friend and Uncle Andy finds great sexual enjoyment from the boy´s sexy and horny mother. Nancy threatens Andy about creating a rift between the toy boys and tells Andy he must continue with the rough sex to keep Shane and his new friend´s friendship healthy. After recovering from her breast cancer surgery, Celia´s mother visits and shows where Celia gets her snobby and bitchy attitude. Nancy expands her business to a local state college when she realizes an Indian student Sanjay (Maulik Pancholy) takes a job tutoring Silas.

The Punishment Light The snubbed dealer who aided in Lupita´s knowing of Nancy´s dealings decides to threaten Nancy, because the pretty suburban woman has taken a huge chunk out of his business. Alejandro (Vincent Laresca) isn´t Nancy´s only problem. Shane bites the foot of a fellow boy during a karate match, which introduces Nancy to the other boy´s father Peter (Martin Donovan). Peter and Nancy quickly find an attraction for each other during dinner. Meanwhile, Andy, Doug and Lupita are destroying Nancy´s home when they realize a rat has busted into Nancy´s stash in a tampon box.

The Punishment Lighter Nancy´s great success takes a sudden downturn when she is busted by a campus security cop while visiting Sanjay. She loses fourteen thousand dollars, but avoids arrest when the campus cop simply wants her stash and to scare Nancy. Nancy´s bakery officially opens and Andy works the counter, but doesn´t care much for trying to make any money. Heylia helps Nancy realize she was conned by the campus cop. Problems with Shane develop when he takes Silas lighter and sets a fire at school. This causes a rift between Shane and Silas when it is revealed the lighter belonged to their father.

The Godmother The season finale finds Nancy´s friendship with Conrad strained when Heylia refuses to let them speak after Conrad roughs up the campus cop. Andy is recalled to service for Iraq, as he is a member of the Army reserves. Silas and Megan take ecstasy and when Nancy punishes Silas for his actions, Silas approaches her about her drug dealing. Conrad secretly comes to Nancy and discusses a new business proposal that can make the both very wealth and Nancy realizes she will need Conrad, Alejandro, Doug, Sanjay, Dean and others to expand her operations. Everything is not always sunny, as Nancy realizes Peter works for the DEA.

"Weeds" has an engaging, entertaining and humorous storyline. The topic of a pretty white widow who lives in wealthy suburbs and tries to keep her house and raise her two problem children by selling dope is truly something original and could never have played out properly on network television. Although I have Showtime, I never watched the series. I did not have much information on the show and typically ignored if it was on. After watching this first season, I am looking forward to the forthcoming second season on Blu-ray and hope to be up to speed for the debut of the third season in three months. Aside from Showtime´s series "Penn and Teller´s Bullshit" and the network shows "Lost" and "My Name is Earl," I have pretty much abandoned television because of the horrid reality shows that rule television. I have may just found another reason to not give up on television completely.
